My Path Through the MAET Program

Below you will find an annotated transcript of the courses I took while I was completing the Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) at Michigan State University. The transcript contains the title of the class and a brief description of the content covered in the course. The classes are listed in the order that I completed them. FALL 2014
CEP 810: Teaching Understanding with Technology
With - Missy Crosby and Allison Keller

This is the first course that I took in the MAET program. The course focuses on learning with technology. In this class we were encouraged to create a digital process and explore the many different ways technology can help us learn. A major component of this class was the networked learning project, which challenged us to learn only using the internet. I learned to crochet thanks to this course, but more importantly the class helps its students to gain a greater understanding of learning, integrate technology into instruction, and create a pressence online.
CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technology to Education
With - Amy Pietrowski and Mary Wever

Picking up where CEP 810 left off, CEP 811 challenged students to learn about new and innovative technologies that are being applied to the field of education. Some of these technologies are SketchUp, Makey Makey, and Picktochart. This course tasked student with using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to incorporate the new technologies into engaging lessons. Students were also able to experience an EdCamp experience while presenting different topics surrounding technology in the classroom.
SPRING 2015
CEP 812: Applying Educational Technology to Practice
With - Colin Gallagher and Sean Marie Sweeney

This course is all about creating change and finding solutions in education. Using what was learned in James Paul Gee's The Anti-Education Era (2013) students research and propose solutions to wicked problems that exist today in education. Wicked problems are not easy to solve alone, so the solutions are created in small groups and presented in a variety of ways to convay how to make the problem a little less wicked.
SUMMER 2015
CEP 800: Learning in School and Other Settings
With - Dr. Cary Roseth and Diana Campbell

In this class students get the opportunity to examine how students learn. Students used the digital storytelling tool to create a lesson within the content they teach. In addition to creating lessons, we used student interviews to analyze misconceptions and guied the instructional choices made based on what the students in our classroom know. This course is very reflective and creates an opportunity to think deeply about how you teach.
CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Research
With - Daniel Freer and Thanh Nguyen

CEP 822 allows the students in the class to take a close look at educational research and how it can be used in the classroom to shape instruction. We learned how interpret and anaylze trends in data. This class also allowed me to conduct research on a topic of my choosing. I chose to analyze the effectiveness of homework on student understanding. I used what I learned throughout the class, from my own data collections, and my research to create a research review project.
CEP 815: Technology and Leadership
With - Benjamin Gleason and Sarah Keenan

This class really helped me to create a stronger vision for where I see myself going in education. This course allows students to learn about the many different leadership styles and decide how the different leaders would respond in certain scenarios. CEP 815 also allowed us to reflect on the technology use in our current professional positions and envision the most effective way to incorporate more technology. The Personal Manifesto project allowed us to propose how to make our visions a reality.
FALL 2015
CEP 820: Teaching Students Online
With - Dr. Anne Heintz and Liz Boltz

As we move forward in education there are an increasing number of opportunities to learn and teach online. To do this with fidelity there is a lot that needs to be considered in designing the courses. CEP 820 teaches us how to take all the components of our in person classes and transfer them to the online class. We used what we learned to create our own online course modules that reflect the content we are currently teaching in our classrooms.
CEP 818: Creativity in Teaching and Learning
With - Dr. Punya Mishra, Jon Good, and Carmen Richardson

This is one of two elective courses I chose to take in the MAET program. Throughout this class I learned the many different components of creativity and how it can be evaluated. Creativity must be novel, effective, and whole. My own creativity was pushed to the limits in this class and I am not able to be more creative as an individual and as a teacher. I am able to take what I learned and improve my instruction and teach my students how to access their own creativity.
SPRING 2016
TE 846: Accomodating Differences in Literacy Learners
With - Jihea Kang

This is the second elective I chose to take in order to complete the MAET program. This course also is required for me to continue to teach in Michigan. This class takes a very close look at literacy and breaks down all the components a student must be taught in order to be considered literate. In TE 846 we interact with the readings and our peers through the use of discussion forums. In addition to the forums, we complete a case study to reflect on the students in our classrooms and their literacy development.
CEP 807: Capstone Portfolio Class
With - Dr. Matthew Koehler, Spencer Greenlagh, and Sarah Keenan

The capstone portfolio class caps off the learning that took place while completing the MAET program. Throughout this course students create digital portfolios that demonstrate how we have changed as educators throughout the program. Students chose the platform to create the portfolio and customized the new site to represent themselves. The class required us to reflect about our learning and how we will use it moving forward in our careers.
